AwesomeShot Studios was asked to create a series of videos for achievement awards recipients over the years. The videos are screened at a luncheon award ceremony and also serve as promotional material for fundraisers.

Case Study - Creative Labs

Creative Labs needed a fun and unique way to introduce their X-Fi audio processing chips to their retailers before the product was launched. They called upon AwesomeShot Studios to create a short but informative video that was screened at the AMC Mercado theaters to a packed house. This allowed the company to present a focused and concise introduction with a minimum of time and resources. The entire production was scripted, shot, edited and delivered within 72 hours.

Case Study - Polycom

Polycom opened a brand new state-of-the art briefing center in Santa Clara and wanted to share the grand opening festivities with their employees and VIP clients. Unfortunately, that wouldn't be possible in a company with 2700 employees given the constraints of the facility. CEO Andrew Miller chose AwesomeShot Studios capture the ribbon cutting, tours and welcoming remarks in order to share with those employees who couldn't attend. Ultimately, this kept downtime to a minimum and saved Polycom thousands.

This wedding was a blast! I knew it would be when I first met with Barbara and Jason last year. They told me about how much they were looking forward to this day and how involved Jason was with the preparations. The early-summer California sun shone down on the first tee of La Rinconada as they couple exchanged their vows. There were tears, laughter, and most importantly, a feeling that this union was meant to be. AwesomeShot Studios was glad to be there and preserve those moments that go by all too quickly, and are soon forgotten.

Eco-chic: One ring to rule them all.

This week, I want to talk a bit about jewelry and it's connection to environmental responsibility. Thanks to recent news exposure, many of us are aware about diamonds and their connection to war-zone conflicts and financing of insurgencies. These so-called conflict, or blood diamonds have been a black-eye to the jewelry industry, who are now pushing 'conflict-free' diamonds from areas such as Canada, Australia and Namibia. The Kimberly process is a step in the right direction, but it does nothing to address the environmental impacts of mining and extraction methods. In countries with advanced infrastructure and stricter government oversight, some efforts are made to restore mined areas to their natural state. That is rarely the case with third-world and conflict diamonds. Heirloom diamonds and lab-made diamonds are a great options that have lower impact on our planet. Gold is perhaps the most popular precious metal, but it is also the most environmentally damaging to extract and process. Thankfully, there are just as many options that will allow you to feel better about your choice of symbols of everlasting love and unity. 'Green Gold', or Oro Verde refers to sustainably and safely mined gold from Columbia. Similar to fair-trade coffee, this fair-trade gold allows an indigenous culture to continue to thrive free of exploitation. Looking for something more unique? Not all of us are vanilla or chocolate fans. Thankfully, there are endless options that will garner just as much admiration and allow you to express your creativity. For a stylish, lightweight and eco-friendly choice, check out titanium. This metal is harder than gold and silver-so you don't have to worry as much about dents and deep scratches. Titanium is also hypo-allergenic if you have sensitive skin. No worries about rashes or discoloration. Gold, silver and other precious metals can be incorporated for unlimited design options. My wife and I chose titanium and couldn't be happier. We even had interior engraving to further customize them. The wonderful lightness of these rings are ideal for men that don't usually wear jewelry. They are a very low-maintenance option. Think you're tough? Well, you're no match for tungsten-carbide rings which can only be cut by a diamond. Sometimes referred to as the permanently-polished ring, they are the most wear-resistant metal you can buy. When you reach your 50th anniversary and look down at your wedding ring, it should shine as bright as the day you first put it on. Not exactly the lightest of metals, but some people prefer the heft of a substantial piece of jewelery. If I were to get a 2nd ring, it would probably be a tungsten-carbide with wood inlay similar to this piece.

Meet Your Next Graphic Designers- Anna & Erin

I've been a little obsessed with business cards lately. They occupy my mind, and a decent portion of my filing cabinet. I must have gone through at least a dozen designs in as many years. They look great when I first have them printed...and I'm eager to pass them around. But within a few months, I start seeing flaws. Pretty soon, I make excuses like "this is my old card", or "I'm in the middle of a re-design". Not a very confident message to send out. If the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, then my self-imposed graphic design was mad indeed.

With that in mind, I was eager to meet with Anna and Erin, two cousins who got together to form Mixed Palette. What an apt name, as they both bring their unique skills to the table. I met with them over some coffee and we had a great conversation about my rebranding needs. They asked excellent questions and showed me an impressive portfolio of work. Within a few weeks, I was reviewing a variety of creative and elegant logos. The hardest part would be choosing just one.

Shannon was the picture of nervous anticipation when I arrived at her parents house a few minutes before 1pm. Her hair and makeup were almost done, thanks to the skill of the fabulous Mina Drake. Her sisters, Ashton, Aundrea and cousin Elizabeth were all in matching white robes looking very relaxed. Could it be that the only one nervous was Shannon's dad? It was hard to tell on this beautiful Saturday afternoon.

With the ceremony only a few hours away, Janet Lash of A Very Special Occasion was no doubt tending to all the stylish details at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga. Leila Simms of Half Moon Flowers would soon arrive to setup the rose and vine arch in birch vases that would frame Shannon and Kerry for their ceremony. DJ Adrian of Sound in Motion DJ's would roll in his systems and prepare the music that would serve as the soundtrack to their day.

I even had some time before Alfred Salom Photography arrived (a rare luxury), which allowed me to get a few stories from the bride on how she and Kerry met and fell in love. It was great to hear how they breezed through their pre-wedding counseling, both agreeing that they had no reservations at all.

When Shannon's uncle showed up in a vintage Caddy, I got a bit jealous that I couldn't be the chauffeur for a day.We arrived at the winery in time to watch the cake setup by BethAnn Goldberg of Studio Cake Design. The weather couldn't be better, and guests started arriving and immediately commenting on the beautiful scenery and decorations.

I knew the bride and groom would be jetting off to Hawaii soon after the wedding, but I wanted to give them a bit of a teaser of their movie to come. Enjoy and congratulations to Shannon and Kerry.

Green Weddings - Fad or Fantastic?

Recent headlines about the BP oil spill in the Gulf got me thinking once again about the impact we all have on this world. I won't rally against the evils of oil, as nothing yet has been found to effectively replace it (especially when it comes to plastics and other oil-related products we rely upon daily). I will recommit myself to maintaining a low footprint in my work and my life.

Small steps, helped by an industry that is finally waking up to the realities of shrinking resources and consumer awareness, can lead to big results. For example, I have completely eliminated disposable batteries since 2009. It required a few (more expensive) equipment purchases...so this is not necessarily a money-saver, at least in the short term. But I'm so much happier knowing that I don't have to dispose of a half-used set of batteries after each and every shoot.

Likewise, moving my demo videos online means fewer DVDs sent out. From 2001-2008 I was averaging 56 mailed DVDs per year. I'm pretty sure they eventually find their way into a landfill. As online viewing options and quality increased, that number greatly decreased. I'm hoping that this year will continue as a online-viewing-only year.

A recent wedding I covered in Monterey included some wonderful, earth-friendly touches such as hand-painted wood cake-toppers and paper-flower table seating guides. Low impact can be quite chic and stylish. The only limit is your imagination and willingness to think outside the box.

In the next few weeks, I'll be writing more about other ways to 'green' your big day.

Swept Away: Lydia & John

Viansa Winery in Sonoma is one of my favorite wine-country destinations. I used to visit there often after I relocated to California from New York. When I found out that I would be capturing Lydia and John's wedding in Viansa, I was excited to return there. I distinctly remember my last wedding at Viansa, as it was 108 degrees and everyone was hugging the shade. A breeze was most welcome that day, and we were all glad when the heat finally broke. By comparison, the 25 mph gusts made the 65 degree day just a bit chillier. The golden sun, bright green vines and warm ocher hues of the winery contrasted with the beautiful blue of the sky and bridesmaids' dresses. Inside the white reception tent a clean white on white scheme was accented with silver twigs holding candle votives. This intimate and beautifully organized wedding was a delight for the senses. The winds might have been blowing a bit more than usual, but it did nothing to faze this wonderful couple.

Spring Scams

Being a small business owner is a constant learning experience. Having never benefited from an Ivy-league biz-school education, I took my cues from my parents, who have owned a business since I was a teenager. My father faced many issues that are common to all businesses, and thankfully, I have been the beneficiary of some of his hard-earned lessons. Most importantly, he has taught me the value of trust as the basis for every business decision.
The advent of the internet has exposed us to a world of associations that wouldn't normally occur. I can conduct a transaction with people around the world, whom I have never met (nor might ever meet). This has, unfortunately, brought about an exploitation you are probably all too familiar with by now: the email scam.
While my wife and I were enjoying a mini-vacation to celebrate my birthday, I received notice that a company in Asia was looking to register my domain name within Asia. The informer put themselves forward as a professional internet consulting company. Their website raised only a few red flags (stock image on home page of a young white male with open arms being the first one). After a few back-and forth emails from the very aggressive "Wanda Peng", I finally had the time to do a bit of digging. Of course, it didn't take long to determine that this is yet another scam that scares business owners into thinking that our very names are at risk of being stolen.
I wish there was a happy ending to this and I could tell you that the offending company has been caught and convicted...but like most overseas scams, I have little hope that anything will be done. At least I didn't get sucked into an expensive and useless service. I can only hope that other business owners find this before they make the mistake of responding to SKDNR/Wanda Peng/AsiaDM or whatever they call themselves tomorrow.

Crystal and Nathan tied the knot in Oakland and chose AwesomeShot Studios to cover their day. The day began appropriately at the "I Do Hair Couture" salon in Los Gatos, before moving up to the Oakland LDS Temple for the ceremony. After a triumphant exit applauded by waiting family and friends, Marielle Hayes of Marielle Hayes Photography took the family around the Temple for portraits.

Soon, it was time to return to Los Gatos where Cindy of the Los Gatos Opera House coordinated an elegant reception for the guests. I was asked to create the photo montage playing for guests as they enjoyed hors d'œuvre and a fun photobooth setup by Kao of PhotoBooth Royale. DJ Tim of Denon & Doyle handled the MC duties like a pro and guided the bride and groom into the room to thunderous applause. Look for the emotional and cinematic video highlights soon.

Lindzie & Brian: A Fine Fall Wedding

This fun couple got married on November 14th at Wine & Roses, but we met a few weeks prior to tape their love story (parts of which are included in these wedding highlights). The cooler weather of early fall and the early sunset meant that the outdoor wedding plans had to change. But the ceremony proceeded without a hitch and the beautiful bride walked up the aisle to admiring glances from friends, family...and her husband to be. Their 2 year old son, Alex, wasn't too pleased to be away from Mom and Dad for so long. But the ceremony was short and sweet, so he was all smiles afterwards. DJ Brian of Denon & Doyle kept the party rocking with the expertly spun music and deftly handled MC duties. Photographer Richard of Everlasting Moments captured the stills.
Little known fact; Lodi is the Zinfandel capitol of the world! Might not be that bad to be "stuck in Lodi again".

What a great idea! After the wedding vows were exchanged in beautiful San Francisco City Hall's rotunda, the guests were treated to a private double-decker guided bus tour of San Francisco on a beautiful September day. The celebration continued in a private room of the Foreign Cinema restaurant where guests were feted while enjoying "8 1/2" by Federico Fellini. Hope other couples catch on to this wonderful way to keep guests entertained during the photo session.

Chateau Felice hosted this sublime wedding of Melanie and Riaz on September 19th. The ceremony was short but emotional, which left more time for the rockin' reception and gourmet food and wine that plays a big role in this couple's life. Sasha Souza Events set the mood expertly with beautiful decorations, flowers, table settings, and pillow-covered benches overlooking the lake. The dynamic duo of Lisa and Sasha of Tu Photography put smiles on everyones faces for the still photos.
Since many of the family members live in India and couldn't attend the wedding, they will soon be able to enjoy the entire day as if they were guest with the best seat in the house. In the meantime, we can share the highlights which incorporate some of the vows, the readings and toasts along with footage of the beautiful bride and handsome groom.

The Historic Sesnon House in Aptos was the backdrop for this emotional weddings that joined Erika to Jesse. The bridal party included some talented groomsmen who lent their skills in song and music for the ceremony and reception.
The warm sun and clear skies set the tone for the outdoor ceremony and dinner. Afterwards, the party moved inside for music laid down by DJ Jack of Music Now DJ's and the Funk Band Groovus. The talented team of Allumer Weddings and Events, Gillett Photography, and yours-truly, AwesomeShot Studios helped to set the mood, and capture the action.

The toasting never stopped at this chic wedding at the beautiful Villa Montalvo. The non-stop action certainly kept me on my toes as there was never a quiet moment. From their first meeting, signing the ketubah, onto the outdoor ceremony and during a gourmet dinner punctuated with toasts, stories, games and songs (as is Russian custom). Of course, every toast ended with shouts of "Gorko", urging the bride and groom to kiss. Who could object? Mazel Tov to this wonderful couple!

Villa Montalvo is dramatic enough in itself without the fast-moving clouds that were rolling in on this July weekend. By the time the string quartet began, the clouds were making way for a strikingly bright exit of the beautiful Vanessa in her custom wedding gown. The handsome groom and anxious bride exchanged their vows under bright skies and amidst adoring glances. The reception was lavish, touching, and funny as the couple toasted each table, played trivia games and dined on a magnificent dinner. No detail was overlooked, which made for a spectacular start to a new life together. Cheers to Vanessa and Chris. Many happy years together to this wonderful couple.

Fields of Gold: Maria and Andrew

Villa Montalvo, the historic and beautiful former home of California Senator James Duval Phelan was the setting for Maria and Andrew's July 3rd wedding. The bright blue sky and typically gorgeous California day set the mood for their vows under a very special chuppa (ceremonial Jewish wedding shelter). A self-described 'small town boy from Tennessee' met his match in a 'Russian-Jewish ice-skater who loves penguins'. Two worlds were joined in a wedding that was both moving and enlightening. Still photography was handled by the wonderful and talented Claudia Akers who I always enjoy working with. The Full Tilt Band supplied the tunes that kept the dance floor packed. What a way to start a holiday weekend!

The challenge: how to ride your custom chopper into a country club with the bride on the back (to the tune of 'Bad to the Bone'). Answer, with great care. Mike and Belle went so far as to plastic wrap the rear tire for this surprise entrance that dropped jaws and garnered many high-fives. Unfortunately, the couple's two 'kids' (Doberman's) weren't allowed to serve as ring-bearers. Other surprises included the groom singing to the bride for their first dance. Needless to say, this was a very well planned, beautiful, emotional and memorable wedding. We were glad to be there to capture the moments that go by as quick as, well, Mikes chopper.

Memorial Day Wedding

If you're going to pick a date to get married, I would recommend holiday weekends. Not only are they easier to remember, but you also get to celebrate future anniversaries with an additional day off. Marisa and JP tied the knot at Martinelli Event Center in Livermore this past weekend on a beautiful (if somewhat windy) summer day. Livermore isn't known for its mild weather, but this one was an absolute dream. I had met with Marisa, and her parents last year and knew that this would be a stylish wedding. Kristen from Sugar Rush Events worked her magic in transforming the event center into a dreamy and colorful fantasy world fit for royalty. Some of the unique elements included crystal chandeliers for the outdoor ceremony, placecards in a sea of coarse rock-salt, and a planter filled with 'dancing shoes' at the corner of the dance floor. Of course, the highlight of the day was the emotional ceremony that combined the two families into one. The beautiful flowers by Jinger of The Flower House surrounded Marisa and JP as they exchanged their vows under the late-afternoon sun. Ingrid Nelson discretely captured the stills on film and was an absolute pleasure to work with. When the sun finally set and all the toasts were over, DJ Stefano from Big Fun DJ's rocked the house with a killer light show and inspired music selection. Nothing pleases me more than seeing empty chairs during the dancing. Even when the cake was waiting for them! Hopefully, the highlights capture the elegance and romance of this evening as narrated by Rev. Angela Yarber, the best man, Chris, and the maid of honor, Celia.

Irene & Joe: A new reason to celebrate Mother's Day

Mother's Day just took on new meaning for Irene and Joe, who tied the knot at Casa Real Event Center in Pleasanton May 10th. This beautiful and emotional wedding under the late afternoon sun had all the elements of a perfect day. Beautiful bride, handsome groom, and the love of friends and family. Mark Gelineau, a first-time officiant and close personal friend of Joe performed a moving ceremony with plenty of humor, personal touches..and even a greeting in Korean! AwesomeShot Studios handled the moving images, the superb team of Augie Chang Photographyhad it all covered for stills. DJ Brandon of Elite Beat Deejays got the crowd on their feet and Alyssia Jones of Casa Real made sure that it all went together smoothly.

Go Speed Racer

After a recent wedding for a couple that I was connected to on Facebook, I started thinking a bit differently about what I can do to keep the energy of the wedding day going and allow friends and family to experience a little bit of what I observed and recorded as a videographer. Not wanting to let the photographers have all the fun of instant feedback, I wanted to contribute in my own way. Therefore, I started putting together a highlight video within a couple of hours.

Knowing the footage intimately, I was able to capture those scenes I would use, set them to the right music, add a few classy effects and encode it for immediate distribution. Of course, this still takes quite a few hours. But since I'm not working on all of the footage, my first few hours are the most crucial ones to getting a great final trailer. There are so many great and emotional shots to choose from...but you've got to really focus on those that tell the story best. Within a half-day of the wedding, I was able to post this video on Facebook to share with Grace and Russ.

What comes around...

When I was just starting out in my video career, I had a job at ABC News in New York's Kennedy airport. I loved it, even though it was a part time job in a small office with no one to talk to. My task was to downlink (not download...this is 1988) "This Week with David Brinkley" and "Nightline" and re-edit them for Delta Airlines in-flight news programs. I would also duplicate the tapes (Sony's Beta format, RIP) for each Delta flight according to the daily manifest. The fun part was rushing to deliver each one to the flights (often minutes before the flight departure).
It was in this job that I got to know Cokie Roberts and Ted Koppel, as well as the late David Brinkley and the other fine journalists of ABC. Unfortunately, I never got to meet any of them in person...but I felt like I knew them. So it was with great satisfaction that I happened to run into Cokie at a video shoot honoring Prof. Charles Ogletree (Obama's Harvard Law professor). When I told my table-mates at the Kaiser Family Foundation about the ABC/Cokie connection, they insisted I introduce myself and repeat the story I had just told them. Well, Cokie got a kick out of it, having been reminded of old times and we chatted about the state of journalism today (having a background in journalism myself). I've never been a star-seeker, but here was a journalist I greatly admired and respected, so I'm proud to have finally come full circle and met 'in reality' the woman who I've seen hundreds of times before.

Charging into 2009

Its a New Year. My first wedding of 2009 is in progress. There is a shaky economy. War hasn't disappeared. Yet I feel confident that this will be a transformative year. I always go into a new year with the hopes that things will get better. This doesn't mean that problems will disappear...but its the HOPE that they can be worked on. Already, I'm excited about the prospect of some fresh leadership in the white house. If we need anything right now, its a bold vision of a better future.

My small part is (and always has been) to consume less and give more. As 'green' as the video industry might be, there is always room for improvement. To that end, I've almost completely eliminated my dependence on Alkaline batteries (audio gear, mostly). The 9V batteries I've used in the past 20 years could easily fill a small room. The rechargable alternatives have never been attractive in terms of performance and lifespan. I had plenty of 50-60% full 9V batteries that I had to dispose of. Recently, I've purchased a new wireless system and audio recorders that use AA batteries. The hybrid rechargeable AA's are much more advanced and do no self-discharge as readily as the old NiMh ones.

I've always relied on (very expensive) rechargeable batteries for my video cameras and portable lights, so I jazzed to be able to replace the alkaline batteries that always seemed to pile up (half used, of course). There is only so much re-purposing one can do with a used AA (trust me, I've tried it all).

So its the calm before the storm. Hard drive is cleaned up and ready for the new batch of footage, desk is (slowly) getting uncluttered, and I have even found time to return to the gym regularly (more than twice a week). I always look forward to this time of year as a time of catching up with the workload, the friends and the family. This year will be a challenging one for everyone, and I often retreat to the safety of my office...even if I don't need to be there. So it was little surprise today that I found myself photoshopping some pictures of our studio-cat Binky. This is his first appearance on my mostly-business blog. At 19 years old, he might not be making a long-term appearance, but we certainly hope he sticks around. He is family, after all.

San Francisco is known for many wonderful things, but consistent weather is not on the short list. Driving up the coast as the fog got thicker, I was glad that this couple chose to tie the knot indoors at the Cliff House, rather than on the deck overlooking the cool-blue Pacific. However cold an windy it might have been right outside the doors, there was a wonderfully warm and inviting group of friends and family that came to watch these two exchange their vows. Anna is a wonderfully expressive and outgoing bride, and Dale could pass for Hugh Grant if he pulled off the British accent.

This past Thursday was the grand opening of Crystal and Claudia's beautiful new studio space in San Jose. The dynamic duo pulled a few rabbits out of their hats in lining up some wonderful sponsors and assembling a great group of people to help them celebrate. Super DJ and radio personality "King" Raffi helped immensely in getting some fun and irreverent interviews from the assembled guests. Congratulations to you both, and thanks for including me in the festivities.

A wedding we captured just about 2 years ago has recently been featured in a relatively new wedding magazine, Your Wedding Day. This particular wedding had never been mentioned by me, nor had a video been made public because the couple wished to maintain some privacy. I'm guessing the proverbial cat is out of the bag. Kudos to the dynamic duo of Kim and Niki for their beautiful still photos.

A trip to the past

Growing up on the east coast, it was pretty easy to run into historic sites dating back to the founding fathers. I often passed by signposts saying 'George Washington Slept Here' (he got around, apparently). I didn't really appreciate these until coming out to California in 1996. History here almost always begins with the earthquake of 1906. So when I read the history of the Mill Valley Outdoor Art Club I wasn't at all surprised to find that it served as a shelter for those made homeless by the quake. But its history is much more interesting than that tidbit...worth a read and a visit.
My visit was for the purpose of Kelly and Lance's Wedding. I'm a big fan of outdoor weddings, even though they have their own unique challenges (ask Kelly about falling leaves). There is something about the outdoors that puts people at ease. This intimate gathering of friends and family was enhanced by the beautiful Indian-summer weather of Mill Valley. I did my best to capture the fun and energy of this couple while Kim and Niki were there to capture the still shots. Check out there blog for the amazing still photos! So what started as a trip to the past ended up as a glimpse into the future...I see many great years ahead for them. Cheers!

The Outlaws

Okay, so they didn't break any laws..but could you find a more aptly named couple than Jessie & James. Jessie (Jessica) was the maid of honor when I covered her sister's wedding in 2006. Now it was her sister's turn to return the favor. Keep an eye out for the beautiful baby being wheeled up the aisle. The bride is also a new auntie!
The location was beautiful and serene Carmel Valley, the Community Church of Monterey and Rancho Canada. A fork in the road leads you to "Play" by turning left, or "Pray" by turning right. Sweet!
Tunes and MC duties were aptly handled by DJ Steve Prelsnik, of Rock Bottom Mobile DJ's. John, from Laura Frost Photography kept a keen eye on the action and captured the bride and grooms joyous day. It's great working with such an easy-going team.

California Fusion

While we often associate California with 'fusion cuisine', there is another kind of fusion I have been witness to since moving here a dozen years ago. The melding of two (or more) cultures. Just as the Romans did with their expansion from England to Egypt, when they came across a new civilization, they didn't seek to erase it...but to incorporate the best elements into their own.

Likewise, the marriage of Latika and Gianluca is a just such a blending. India and Italy...the Tarrantella and Bangara. Hosted by Nestledown, in the beautifully serene Santa Cruz Mountains..this one was a feast for the senses. Superbly executed by Nicole D'Ambra Wedding Consulting, there was beauty in all the details. Family came from near...and very far to help these two celebrate a wonderful new type of California fusion.

I'm sure you've heard the saying "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco" Normally, the same can be said of foggy Half-Moon Bay. Having completed my 2nd wedding there this season, I figured that (once again), I should dress in layers, keep a heavy coat handy, and prepare to wipe down my lens often. But nature threw me a wonderful curve ball with Larissa and Matt's wedding at the Ritz

Perhaps it was Taylor Nguyen, a force of nature herself, who ordered up the sunny skies and beautiful weather. After all, Ha Le Events has been known to pull off a miracle or two.

The stills were handled by the super-skilled Todd Rafalovich.

Of course, credit must be given to the radiant smile of Larissa, whose smile would have broken through any clouds daring to intrude on this wonderful union of families.

The fire isn't only in the hills

This being California's wildfire season, I was saddened when the mother of the bride for an upcoming wedding told me that the hills behind the Clos La Chance Winery had fallen victim to the Hummingbird Hills fire. This beautiful area, more Napa than South Bay has Oak and Manzanita covered rolling hills and a beautiful spread of manicured grapevines. I read about the winery's struggle to fight back the fire that threatened their beautiful estate. Thankfully, they were successful. When I arrived on-site, I was pleasantly surprised that the hills weren't bare. In fact, the charred section dotted with trees almost looked like a planned clearing.
None of this took away from the fact that Katelyn and Jason were exchanging vows among friends and family in a majestic setting. The black tie affair was as an elegant affair with gourmet food, wonderful wine (of course), and flowers everywhere. The party crowd filled the dance floor at times drowning out the music from DJ Tim. We were there to capture the beauty and emotions of the day.

Gayle & Mark: The Trailer

Here is a great couple that I met almost a year ago. Right away, we had a lot in common. They are both avid outdoor enthusiasts who've camped and hiked some of my favorite locations. Gayle, like my wife has rescued cats and they have even decided to honeymoon in one of my favorite destinations, Costa Rica. I listened to their story of how they met over a softball game, and I knew this couple was destined to stay together (they already play together). So I hope to spend more time with them upon their return and perhaps even join together for a camping trip.
Claudia Akers of Claudia Akers Photography deftly handled the stills and got stunning shots (which she kindly shared with me for inclusion in the video). Gayle is a natural in front of the lens and was working her angles like a top model.

Mark had a few butterflies in the stomach, which matched nicely with the theme of butterflies that decorated each table. Even the cake reflected their love of the great outdoors. It was a tribute to their hike up Yosemite falls, where Mark proposed to Gayle.

So while the lucky couple are still zipping through the cloud forests, I'm hard at work here on terra firma.

Carrie and Andy: Dedication from Dad

The Hayes Mansion is one of San Jose's most enchanting wedding locations. This Mediterranean Revival-style mansion with 65 rooms and 41,000 square feet is fit for a modern day king, (or Hollywood celebrity). I often wonder when Angelina and Brad will buy it from under our feet and keep it out of sight from the public. Until then, I'm glad that we don't have to own a Gulfstream IV to be able to stop by (or attend one of the many conferences held there).
Our very own Carrie and Andy were the celebrities du-jour on a warm May 17th as they exchanged their vows on the stately lawn. Andy's Marine-colleague sword detail was on hand to announce the bride and groom as they began their new life together.

Before the evening ended, the parents dedicated the song "I hope you dance" to the newlyweds, and this is where our recap begins.

Reality shows and the bride

It used to be that the quality of production was one of the most important factors in getting distribution and airtime. Thanks to reality shows like "Big Brother", "Survivor" and almost anything aired on MTV, a paradigm shift has taken place in broadcast television and on the internet. When a clip on YouTube can garner more viewership than a nationally broadcast program, you know that the rules have changed. Armed with a typical cell-phone, almost anyone can become a broadcaster. Television programming has busted out of the small screen, and onto the smaller screen.

The reason I cover this is that we are witnessing a revolution (and it will be televised). I've just begun to take advantage of this in small ways (posting a couple's recap online for family to share, transferring their weddings to iPods and other portable media players. There are even resources I can call upon to webcast a wedding...live!

My newest foray into the 'small screen' is a way for couples to preserve moments from their honeymoon on video. Unfortunately, I don't often get to follow a couple to Fiji, Italy, Japan or India...but I do offer a portable camcorder (about the size of an iPod) that they can use to videotape memorable moments. (Of course, I tell them to keep it PG rated).

The mini-camera comes with some quick and simple instructions and tips on getting good clips. It recharges via USB, holds about 1 hour of high quality video and has the all important 'delete' button to erase any clips they don't like. The returned footage will be edited down to a short music video and delivered on DVD or posted online. Since this is the first summer I am offering the service, I don't have any samples to share (yet).

As a videographer, I greatly enjoyed videotaping my honeymoon in Bali. The resulting 10 minute edited video is the highlight of my wedding video. It didn't distract from my enjoyment of the honeymoon any more than a still-camera would...and the sights and sounds are infinitely more enjoyable than a collection of snapshots.

Another year older..but wiser?

Its my birthday, and I haven't written anything in a while. While the calendar says I'm 38, I still feel like the guy who just graduated from college and has a whole lot of living left to do. I'm very glad to be in an industry I love that affords me the opportunity to be creative, travel and meet wonderful people.

I've been a bit busy with the forums and my newest addition to my growing video camera collection, the Canon HV30. Its a small, light handheld camera that would have blown the doors off of any video camera 5 years ago. That isn't to say its the bee's knees (who came up with that expression?). Its a consumer/prosumer camera with cruder controls and tweakability than the pro HDV cameras. I plan on using it as an unmanned camera during 2 camera shoots.

All things considered, the 'big brother' XH-A1 and 'little brother' HV30 are playing nicely together. I even put a rig together to compare them side-by-side at the same location.

Vampires.

Thats what I like to call the good folks over at Stanford Blood Center. They call me without fail for a blood donation (in for an ounce, in for a pound). My first donation was in high-school...and I’ve probably donated on average once a year since then. When you finally settle down someplace and donate to a place that keeps records (like Stanford), they put you on a ’rewards program’. So this being my 8th donation to SBC, I get the gallon pin (seen here). Obviously, I’m in this for the gifts. I think when I get to the 10 gallon mark, I get a pen...or is it the scarf. But all joking aside, they really are a caring and dedicated bunch of workers and volunteers doing a great service. Just a day before my donation, I read an article about the shelf-life of blood being shortened from 6 weeks to 2 weeks. Needless to say, this would put a huge crimp on current inventory.

My father was always a blood donor, and I consider him a great person, so why not follow in his footsteps?

Thar she blows

I can't believe that I've been living in California since 1996, and the closest I came to a whale was from an overlook at Big Sur. I've always wanted to see one up close (preferably in their natural element). So on a recent trip to Mendocino with friends, we had the opportunity to book an excursion with Noyo Harbor charter boats. The sky was grey and the air misty with saline, but we were all excited to get up close with the migrating grey whales of the Pacific. Sure enough, we weren't disappointed. Much of what we saw was spine and tail, especially as they took a big gulp of air before their deep dives. I left the still photography to our most-capable friends while I handled the video. The swells were enough to put a few unlucky passengers clutching rails, but we had a blast.

Welcome to the madness

Archbishop Mitty puts on quite a show for their March "Monarch Madness" battle of the classes. I've been lucky to be a part of this since 1998, and I've seen many a freshman class lose only to triumph as seniors 3 years later. This is a loud, raucous and energetic exhibition of sports, dance and artistic skills that fills the San Jose Civic center with a crackling energy. The shoot is always challenging, as the events change and the floor is crowded. But with two cameras always rolling, we are guaranteed to get good results. Guess that is why they keep me coming back year after year.

Every now and then, I like to mix things up and keep it fresh. When Brenda and Todd got married in Seascape (Aptos), they had everything nailed. The weather was beautiful, the guests nervously anxious, the location was scenic, the bride's dress elegant...you get the picture. In talking with them before the wedding, I knew that Brenda wanted a Shania Twain song for her highlights. Being that she is an up and coming country-rock singer, I knew that music was an important element for her. It is also quite inspiring to me, and I'm always on the lookout for fresh music that would help drive my editing. This particular video remix was from a song that I knew would take the visuals in a new direction.

Faster than a speeding bullet

What a weekend! I woke up to beautiful blue California skies (never get tired of that). I shook off the morning sleepies, headed downstairs for a light breakfast in anticipation of an afternoon hike, or trip to the gym. It was 8am, and I had all the time in the world. I didn't plan on doing much more than a short shopping trip for a TV stand. The new Sharp 52" LCD arrived, and was sitting in a box, waiting for our old rear-projection to move out of the way. But I digress. I decided to wake my wife around 9:30, and we spent a few minutes talking about work/life/plans...the usual. The phone rang a short while later, and it was my photographer friend Lisa Leigh . She was upbeat and cheery, but very intent on letting me know that this was going to be a most unusual phone call. I told her that strange requests are a daily routine, and if hers was the oddest, there was a Peet's Coffee gift card waiting for her.

Lisa: "Are you available for a wedding today at 2pm?"
Me: "Well, I guess so, I didn't have anything scheduled"
Lisa:"Great, its in Tahoe, can you leave now?"
Me:"Well, it would be a real stretch, seeing as how I'm 4 hours away"
Lisa:"Can you do it for $1200"
Me:"Ummm....no, I'm sorry. I think the gas alone would cost me that much."(have you seen the prices in the Tahoe area?)
Lisa:"Okay, I'll talk to the parents...let me get right back to you."

So the time is now 10am, and I'm guessing that this won't go through....but just in case, I start assembling my gear and getting dressed. I do a quick Mapquest check and see that their location will take me a shade under 4 hours. Quick math: 10am+4 hours+traffic?+setup time=missed ceremony, angry couple, distressed videographer. I call back Lisa and leave a message saying that I don't think its going to work (no matter the price). Unless the ceremony started at 2:30pm. No answer, minutes go by, I get worried (they are probably expecting me already). So I jet to the car, gear in tow, buckle up for a speedy ride and pray that there are no slowdowns. The handy GPS on the dash gives me an ETA of 2:14pm. Eeek! Still no word from Lisa and more minutes tick by while I cruise up Hwy 680.
Lisa:"They'll delay the ceremony until you arrive".
Me: {gulp}"I'll do my best to get there ASAP

To wrap it up, the gods must have been with me! I made it by 1:45pm, with enough time to tuck in my shirt, park illegally, and setup my gear. ITS ON BABY!

For the sake of my sanity, I surely hope that this isn't going to be a habit.

I'm back (but then again, I never left)

Has it really been this long between postings? Must be my aversion to blogs. It always seemed to me that I do enough talking in person...why would anyone need to read anything I haven't said aloud? Then I realized that I do most of my talking to myself, my wife, and occasionally the cats (no, I'm not on medication).
I guess there have been some developments of late; most recently its the whole 'changeover to HD' issue that seems to have many of us videographers' knickers in a twist. Sure, it looks great on a High Definition monitor when properly lit, recorded and edited. But I don't hear the kicking and screaming of clients (yet) demanding this format. I jumped in nonetheless (never wanting to be the first or last to embrace technology).
The pro's and con's are best left to another debate; but my feeling is this: once we can solve the delivery-issue, High Definition video will take off. Just as cassette tapes replaced the 8-track, and CD's replaced vinyl (you can argue that with me if you wish), new technology is like a genie in a bottle. Once its let out, you can't stuff it back. Never fear, I predict that there will be a day in the very near future, when someone asks me 'Can you make it look like it was shot in standard definition 4:3? I'll be happy to oblige.

The problem with technology

I'm currently in the process of fixing someone's wedding video. I'm not going to mention any names to protect the innocent (and not so innocent), but I know for a fact that this couple was shown a polished, well shot and edited wedding video and signed on believing that they could expect the same (or similar quality).

So here I am, late at night, fixing the work of 2 amateurs with decent-quality cameras and wishing I could give them a piece of my mind. This isn't the first time I've been asked to clean up someone's 'video mess'. And at least the junk coming out of their cameras is of higher quality (due to camera technology alone).

The best analogy I can come up with is the person who buys the best cookware, but doesn't have the skills to make minute rice properly. Will their food taste better after their purchase? Probably not...but at least it won't start a fire.

If you are a couple considering hiring a videographer, ask to see some raw footage. Editing can often make a silk purse of a sow's ear, but the raw footage speaks volumes about the quality of the person behind the camera.

If you won the lottery on Monday, would you show up to work on Tuesday? Do you feel like you were born into your profession or was it more like a push, shove and the fear of unemployment that keeps you where you are? I have always strived to do what I loved, as soon as I figured out that I was talented enough to do a good job in what I chose. I don't imagine that I could love a profession or hobby if I had no aptitude in it. I suppose that I might be a good doctor, lawyer or mechanic if I gave it a try...but life is short enough.

Sometimes, we choose our work, and sometimes it chooses us. Maybe that is why, against the urging of my father, and the admonishions of my college professors who told me that 'the money is in advertising and sales', I stayed the course with photography and video.

After 16 years behind a camera, and many adventures, I feel like the luckiest person on earth. If I can still do this at age 80, I might just continue doing so. In the meantime, I look forward to each day and the places I'll go, the people I'll meet and the new things I will learn. Is there a better profession out there for me? Maybe. I still dream of being a National Geographic photographer, but travel gets more difficult each year, especially since 9/11. So I travel in my spare time and dream that I'm on assignment.
